Support for Azure SQL
4

Hi there,
as far as I know there is no official support for Azure SQL for the WEBCON BPS databases today. If we implement WEBCON BPS in a customer's own Azure tenant as their private cloud, it would be smart to use Azure SQL, because of the integrated HA features, scalability and low maintenance effort.
WEBCON BPS is very well integrated with Microsoft technology and has great integrations with Microsoft services, i.e. M365. I would strongly appreciate, if support for Azure SQL could be added in near future.
We already tested it and with some workarounds at installation time it works. But we cannot recommend this to our customers if there is no official vendor support. Thanks :-)

I requested this too about two years ago at webcon, and I can't remember the official answer, and I can't find it either. Still, it was related to how webcon can connect to different servers to work with other databases. It was something related to the functionality of on-premise SQL servers that cloud SQL as a service didn't have. I would appreciate it if someone from WEBCON would complete my poor explanation.

WEBCON

Azure SQL Database does not support distributed transactions across cloud databases, and that's the main reason why WEBCON BPS does not support installation using Azure SQL Database. (you can not use more than one content DB, you can not use any attachment DB...).

Yes, we know that: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-sql/database/elastic-transactions-overview and yes we (WEBCON) will support installation using Azure SQL DB soon (when the preview version becomes production).

Hi Pawel,
one of our prospects, who is at the point of decision, asked wether official support for Azure SQL will come in early 2022 release.
Can you provide more precise information about the planned release date for Azure SQL support?
I strongly believe that Azure SQL support will become more and more important.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I'm confused. :)
We have blog post

Azure SQL Managed Instance distributed transactions are generally available! You can now run .NET and T-SQL distributed transactions across multiple Managed Instances. We support distributed transactions across Managed Instances in different regions, subscriptions and VNETs.

The first sentence begins with a link

Maybe they forgot to remove the preview when they updated the page. :)

Hi Daniel, well, this information you mentioned is quite new: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/azure-sql-blog/distributed-transactions-available-now-for-azure-sql-managed/ba-p/2912978 (dated 2nd Nov. 2021)
Maybe there is some testing and adoption necessary on side of WEBCON.
I'm looking forward for more detailed information about general availability for Azure SQL support by WEBCON BPS.

Please remember that Azure SQL Database it is not the same product as Azure SQL Managed instance.

The original question was about Azure SQL.
